How I Feel

Lucky to be here, and honored to have met so many writers I’ve long admired, like Ron Rash (pictured above) and Tess Gallagher (yes, I finally said hello, and she was so kind) and newer discoveries, like Tania Hershman, Madeleine D’Arcy, and Nyk de Vries (a Friesian writer I predict will soon take the U.S. by storm). Does feeling lucky already mean I didn’t hunt for four-leaf clovers?

No, I did:

(A tiny one, my favorite kind, from Kinsale.)

What a pleasure it was to meet you and Richard in Cork! May your writing continue to flourish and thank you for the lovely four-leaved clover. In our kitchen right now there’s a framed picture which consists of a scorched fragment of a €20 note and below are the words, “The last known remnant of the Celtic Tiger discovered at 2.10pm on 28th February 2009 in Hanover Street, Cork City.” I’m aiming to put your lucky clover into a frame next to it with an appropriate script, because you are a breath of fresh air and we need all the help we can get to drive our recession blues away! All good wishes from Madeleine.

  2. I’ve been reading Ron Rash of years. A wonderful writer, a well-deserved win.
